FT-86 Concept

Although a bit late news- wise, Toyota will be displaying their new compact FR sports concept vehicle, the FT-86 Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show.

This car is a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru.It’s scheduled to be released in late 2011. Fuji Jyuko (Subaru) will supervise manufacturing and the vehicle will be sold through both dealerships.

トヨタは東京モーターショー2009に、小型FRスポーツコンセプト「FT-86 Concept（エフティー・ハチロク・コンセプト）」を出展する。

FT-86 Conceptは、08年4月にトヨタと富士重工業による共同開発が表明され、11年末に市場投入が目標のFRスポーツカーのコンセプトモデル。生産は富士重工業
が担当し、トヨタとスバルの両ブランドで販売する予定だ。

I don’t know how much of this concept interior will make it into the final production model.

内装はかっこいいけど量産モデルはどうなるか？

The engine will use Subaru’s proven flat engine technology and come with a 6spd MT. The name 86 is derived from the Corolla AE86…why? I don’t know. It has nothing in common with the AE86 except for Toyota…and they’re not even going to put it together… Since Subaru is Fuji Jyuko, you can tell why it’s probably named the FT. Fuji Jyuko + Toyota…maybe…

エンジンは、スバルの伝統である水平対向4気筒自然吸気ガソリンエンジンを搭載、トランスミッションは6速MTだ。車名の86＝ハチロクは、83年にトヨタが発売した
小型FRスポーツカー、4代目「カローラ・レビン」「スプリンター・トレノ」の1.6Lモデルの車両型式番号「AE86」にちなんで名付けられている。理由は全く分からないけどね…スバルが生産するし、エクステリアはMAZDAみたいだし…

The compact car will be 4160mm long and have a low center of gravity.By using the flat engine and keeping the center of gravity low, they are looking to reap the handling and aerodynamic benefits.The driving position will take inspiration from race cars and the lightweight body will be designed so that the driver can fling the car around any direction he pleases. Would I buy one? …maybe.

全長は4160mmのコンパクトなボディー。

全高を低くできる水平対向エンジンのメリットを生かして、ボディーは低重心で空力特性が優れたもの。ドライビングポジションはレーシングカー感覚に仕立てられ、小型軽量のボディーをドライバーが意のままにコントロールできることを目指している。
